Welcome back to the second week of the Mistborn group read! As always, it’s hosted by Stainless Steel Droppings. I know I’m a day late on this one, but it’s been quite a busy week for me here. Without further ado, here’s my group questions and answers! There will be spoilers up until the point we’re at in the group read.
1. The nobility, the skaa, and the Lord Ruler have integral roles in the novel and yet we haven’t really interacted with them much. Do you think there is a reason for this? Have you formed an opinion about them?
I think keeping the Lord Ruler distant is a strategy for keeping him mysterious to the reader. Sanderson has to build up the suspense surrounding him. I also think we experience him as this almost mythic being, much as the skaa and the crew view him. The nobility certainly sound like they’re not very nice, but we have mostly just Kelsier’s prejudice towards them and the skaa contempt.
2. Religion plays a vital role in the story. What is your opinion about the role of religion under the Lord Ruler? What do you think of Sazed’s role as a Keeper.
One of my favorite world building elements in fantasy is religion. I really enjoy seeing how religion and belief are created in different ways to different people. This makes Sazed one of my favorite characters to read about because he always has some intriguing religion to talk about. I also think that Sanderson is great at creating religions in his own fantasy worlds and the Lord Ruler being immortal and all-powerful is one of them.
3. Are you for/against/or ambivalent about Kelsier’s plan to overthrow the Lord Ruler? Do you think his heart is in the right place or is it just revenge?
I definitely root for the underdogs, so I’m for the overthrowing of the Lord Ruler. I want the skaa and Vin to be freed from this dictatorship. For Kelsier though, I feel like it’s mostly about revenge. If that means he gets to free a bunch of people under a corrupt regime, that’s a bonus.
4. Vin and Kelsier are the main characters of the novel, yet there are many characters. Is there a certain character who intrigues you more than the others?
Like I mentioned earlier, I really like Sazed. I always like to hear about his many religions (how does he know them all?), and just his general amiability. Other than him though, I’d have to say I’m partial to Breeze. I don’t even know why particularly. Maybe it’s his rapport with Ham, or his great use of his Allomancy, but I like him.
